Looking to Sell Your Website?

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I’m looking to expand my roster of websites.

So if you’ve an old, unloved project that needs some tender loving care and a new home, I’m all ears. I’m looking for established sites with traffic. Decent domains are a bonus.

I’m not looking for:

  • ‘Turnkey’ sites (read: shoddy knockoffs)
  • Some old tat you can’t shift on Digital Point
  • Dropshipping sites
  • Smut

Interested? Drop me a line with the URL, price expectations and traffic/revenue stats for the year to date. I’ll aim to reply within one working day.

Contact Form Broken

My contact form has been broken for the last few weeks. If you got in touch during April, best to assume I didn’t get your message and resend now it’s fixed. Thanks!

Domain Lookup Update: New Registrars & Tools

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Domain Lookup 1.1 adds support for a total of 60 registrars/domain tools, 30 TLDs and fixes a couple of minor glitches.

The two most interesting improvements are support for some of my favourite domain tools: Estibot and DomainTools.com.

DomainTools.com should need no introduction: it’s the webmaster’s swiss army knife, offering tools like WHOIS lookups and registrant search.

Estibot is an automated domain appraisal tool that estimates pricing data from factors like past sale prices, link popularity, phrase popularity etc.

    Domain Lookup: Your Feedback

    Friday, March 28th, 2008

Holy moly. The response to my Domain Lookup for Firefox tool has been staggering.

The tool hit 1,000+ active users in a little over two weeks thanks to blog writeups, forum threads and StumbleUpon. That’s before I’d had a chance to start any “real” (read: planned and paid-for) marketing.

I’ve had a few dozen emails from users saying they love the tool. A handful have asked about a tip jar. At the moment, all the tool’s downloads are driven by word of mouth recommendation. So instead of a tip, perhaps you’d consider:

    • Blogging about the tool
    • Sharing it on your favourite social media site
    • Sharing it on your favourite geek forum
    • Telling your webmaster, SEO and domainer friends
    • Adding it to your email signature

If you *really* want to give me something, I have an Amazon Wishlist. Thanks for your kind words and support.

There’ll be an early April auto-update adding new registrars that users have requested (please tell me your if your favourite is MIA). Don’t forget to subscribe to my RSS feed or email alerts to keep up to date.

PS. If you’ve not yet tried Domain Lookup for Firefox yourself, it takes mere seconds to install and is guaranteed to turn you into a millionaire domainer overnight*.

    (* Possibly untrue.)

    New WordPress Theme

I’ve just installed a new WordPress theme. Bear with me as I iron out the countless CSS glitches…

    I Love Swivel.com

    Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

    Swivel Logo

Like all quasi-autistic geeks, I love pointless factoids - almost as much as meaningless statistics. Such as the fact that the Tokelau Islands boast a staggering 1,300+ domain registrations per capita.

So I was delighted to learn that Disraeli’s glib one-liner - “lies, damned lies and statistics” - now has a Web 2.0 proof with Swivel.com.

Swivel bills itself as a Web 2.0 data visualization site. So far, so boring. But what it excels at is one of my favourite past times: using statistics to prop up baseless-but-fun assertions. Let’s examine some of my favourite examples:

Now Joe Schmo can now equate cause and effect with no supporting evidence beyond a super-swish 3D line graph. Now that’s what I call organising the world’s information!

PS. I am a genuine fan of Swivel, despite my droll examples, so be sure to try it out.

    Pre-PubCon 2007 Meetup

    Monday, December 3rd, 2007

    john-denver.gif

I’m flying London to Las Vegas for PubCon in a few short hours.

By a staggering coincidence, I find myself watching the John Denver story (think “Leaving on a Jet Plane”) in a Tokyo-style pod hotel. Anyway…

The unofficial PubCon Facebook group has organised a small pre-Pubcon get together on Monday night. Details below, care of group admin Brian:

We’re meeting for dinner at 6:30 PM on Monday at the Grand Lux Cafe. We plan to eat, drink and be merry, then head over to the Wynn to join up with other PubCon attendees who will no doubt be crawling about the bars there….unless a better option presents itself. We’ll meet outside the Grand Lux Cafe at 6:30 PM. It’s at the back of the Venetian casino.

At a loose end? Come along.

What Would Richard K Miller Do?

    Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I’m a big fan of the the What Would Seth Godin Do Wordpress plugin.

WWSGD shows new users extra information about your blog, like this:
What would Seth Godin do plugin screenshot

It’s useful for prompting users to subscribe via RSS, to show a special offer or… well, I’m sure you can think of plenty of uses yourself.

Thanks to WWSGD author Richard K Miller for help working out why it went AWOL with my Wordpress theme.

    From Google With Love

    Saturday, September 15th, 2007

You know you’ve arrived when Google sends you wedding salutations.

Aaron Wall, the man behind SEO Book, is getting married in the Philippines. While he’s away, well-wishers at Mountain View - or their Swedish counterparts - are running a wedding Easter egg in his honour. Bizarrely, the Easter egg is showing on Google.se for ‘local handyman’ searches.

Seen any sightings yourself? Leave a comment below. Thanks to Scott at Netservice for the screenshot.

Update: Doh. Fraser at AffiliateBlog.co.uk points out the SEO Quake Firefox plugin is responsible.

New Years Resolution #2: Work Smarter

    Thursday, January 11th, 2007

A confession: I bought geek classic Getting Things Done by David Allen a year ago. I’ve never got around to reading it.

This year I vow to work smarter, including:

    • Partnering for larger projects
    • Outsourcing admin etc, perhaps with GetFriday.com (via The London Times)
    • Aim to work 10-6, not 12-12
    • Read the damn David Allen book
